Magnetic particle testing is a nondestructive method for detecting primarily linear discontinuities located at or near the surface of ferromagnetic components and structures.

  • The process is governed by the laws of magnetism and is restricted to materials that can support magnetic flux lines.
  • Metals are classified as ferromagnetic, paramagnetic or diamagnetic.
  • Only ferromagnetic metals can be effectively examined using magnetic particle inspection methods.

Reliable field evaluation

Particles need an unimpeded path to migrate into strong and weak leakage fields. The component must therefore be clean and dry before inspection; oil, grease or scale can compromise the examination.

When a lapse or crack is present, the resulting indication is evaluated by a technician to determine the location, size, shape and extent of the imperfection.

Barracuda’s capabilities cover most MT applications. Direct or induced magnetization can be performed with portable or fixed inspection systems, while multidirectional systems support large-volume NDT projects.
